9 Most In-Demand Tech Jobs and How to Get Started

Advancements in human evolution haven’t been without a simultaneous shift in the skillset and labour landscape. Today, about 65% of the world’s most sought-after talent revolves around technology. And on a daily basis, more skills and opportunities in tech are opening up and yearning to be filled. 

In 2016, iCIMS, a US-based recruitment software company, published a report which revealed that companies spend an average of 55 days to fill a tech role that year. Three years later,  that number rose to 66 days, in 2019.

Putting the report verbatim, “such vacant positions can cost about $680 in lost revenue daily.” This presents a case of high demand versus extra slim supply! And as iCIMS puts it, these demands wouldn’t get any lesser in decades to come. 

McKinsey corroborated this in its 2018  Skill Shift research which states that “the strongest growth in demand will be for technological skills, which will rise by 55 percent and by 2030 will represent 17 percent of hours worked, up from 11 percent in 2016.” — McKinsey Skill Shift Report, 2018. 

All of these companies are hitting on one central message–there is a skyrocketing search for quality tech talents by top organisations to fill up pressing roles, which, if left unattended, could result in major losses for such companies!

US-based research shows that the digital economy is growing at thrice the pace of GDP and employees in the digital economy are earning an average of $114,275 annually which is more than 72% of workers in the country.

Cyber Security has become one of the most important and highly demanding positions to fill in tech, in recent times. According to a report by Focal Point, “the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects a 32% growth in hiring for the Cybersecurity Analyst role between 2018 and 2028 – far outpacing the average for the other roles on this list. Since just last year, the total number of job openings for a Cybersecurity Analyst has increased by almost 4,000”.

But before we get into the juicy details about cybersecurity, let’s explore why it should even get on this list in the first place. 

Why is Cyber Security one of the top in-demand skills? 

Evidently, the technology age has fueled the need to tighten security in recent times.  Among the hottest topics featured almost every day in the news include; security breaches, phishing scams, alleged election malpractices and hacking, leading to an increased in demand for qualified cybersecurity professionals. 

 A McAfee Economic report states that cybercrimes cost the global economy as much as $600 billion in 2017, wreaking havoc on GDPs across the world.

Despite these staggering losses, the dangers posed by cybercrimes aren’t abating. In fact, global crime damages are predicted to hit $6 trillion by 2021.

A few years back, Forbes also published a piece on the effects of Cybercrime in the world, particularly in the UK with a report showing 46% of all businesses exposed to cyber-attacks at least once in the year. Sore as this sounds, there’s a wealth of opportunities.

Currently, it’s been reported that nearly three million cybersecurity professionals will be needed to secure top jobs across the globe. In Africa, Cybersecurity specialists salaries start from $750 monthly according to MySalaryScale report.

Statista reveals that IT firms have adopted model-based Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to solve complex problems. Machine Learning is becoming an important aspect of modern business and research. ML enhances the analysis of large-sized data as well as simplifies the tasks of data scientists through an automated learning process.

Machine learning has changed the way data extraction and interpretation works by involving automatic sets of generic methods that have replaced traditional statistical techniques. Thus, ML algorithms automatically build a mathematical model using sample data – also known as “training data” – to make decisions without being specifically programmed to make those decisions.

Machine Learning is a very interesting career path. For those new in this field, Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of AI, and most times when describing AI, ML is described, the reason being that ML is the core process through which AI learns.

While you can get started by self-learning and utilising free resources on platforms like YouTube or paid ones on Udemy or Coursera, you should opt-in for digital certifications to help you stand out. 

To get started in the field, you have to prepare yourself in the following areas; content creation, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Social Media Marketing (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc), Display Advertising, YouTube ads, Google Ads, Email Marketing and Content Marketing. 

A lot of Digital Marketing Professionals have in recent times, added Graphics Design to their core. The reason being, while you might be able to create text content, visual representation is very essential to pulling in your target audience and sending your message across. Some even go the extra mile to get familiar with Content Management Systems such as WordPress and basic HTML. This gives them a better edge when deploying SEO strategies.

Like most tech skills that are currently in-demand, the world of Extended Reality requires no rigid background requirements. The starting point for most is usually by taking a Virtual Reality course which gives several career options. These options include: 

Working your way from a junior to a senior virtual or augmented reality developer requires commitment and hard work. Most come into the job through gaining experience in their field. Senior developers are also expected to be excellent coders which requires constant practice and immersion.

Usually, Virtual and Augmented reality developers are confused and transposed. But they both have a distinct play. This field requires that you at least have a foundation in coding backed with some experience with 3D software design and development.
